Physical Images Narrative Use this field to attach your narrative about the site. The place I was curious to visit in the Living New Deal was the Sanitary Sewer System in Fairfax VA. I was interested because I have lived in this area basically my entire life and have never known that our sewer system was created during the New Deal. This project was first begun in the Great Depression, specifically 1936-1937. The Public Works Administration only granted $44,956 to the project which caused a lot of back-lash such as strikes and postponing construction due to the fact that the amount of money needed for this type of project is around $100,088. Having to raise the rest of the money took a longer time than expected and thus delayed the final product, this is bad obviously because a town needs a working sewer system to avoid the spread of diseases. I took photos of the surrounding area however there was no entry way to the sewers themselves. I did speak to a couple Fairfax locals who said the stone and cement used in the original making of these sewers is still intact and running properly with no known problems since it was completed. I choose the Occoquan Wharves because it is something that I had grown up visiting but never knew the history behind it. I think when it was created, the idea behind it was to help employment and businesses in the area, it help facilitate a lot of imports and exports coming from and to Washington D.C., especially when you consider the amount of small family businesses infront of the wharf. Technology wise, I used my phone to document on site and my laptop to create text. While researching the area, I learned that it was destroyed by huge floods in the late 1960's and 70's and that proabably had some part to do with the fact that infrastruture was definitely not as advanced as it is today. The chances of it getting completely destroyed with todays infrastructure is significantly less than 1934. Earlier this year I first encountered the Cathedral of Learning while on a trip to the University of Pittsburgh where my sister is a student. She recounted that this is the largest academic building in the western hemisphere and has been affectionately referred to as Cathy by the students. Considering the magnitude of this building and its original commission date (1921) and its completion date (1934) it is not unlikely that the project was originally postponed because of the Great Depression. Eventually it was used as construction site through the CWA to help employ more people seeking work in the area. It is particularly interesting to revisit Cathy not as a tourist but as a student completing my work. It's towering arches and Gothic embellishments have been relegated to the backdrop of everyday life as students move towards their classrooms. This I think is the most interesting thing about the project and this building and my ability to capture it all on my phone. This documentary project becomes more about observing the ordinary lives of people as they make use of the foundations that were built for them. This site highlights the ordinary lives of the students who attend school at the University of Pittsburgh and in this way echos older documentary styles. I used my camera phone as well as a recording app to document this site. This site does not lend itself to the passing on of a historical narrative in the way that one might expect. Yet, I feel that it is important to acknowledge its importance. The Fairfax City Sewer project in the late 1930’s was a very expensive endeavor, and provided work for many whom otherwise may have been left destitute. The sewer itself was built to improve sanitation and quality of life for everyone in Fairfax City, and furthermore allows for us to maintain the certain comforts of life that are often taken utterly for granted. I think that because of that effect, even something as base and unglamorous as the building of a sewer network can still be seen as significant, especially for those who live or work in Fairfax today. I used my iPhone 8 to document the site, using photography and sound recording. I think that this method is very similar, albeit far easier to manage, to the methods used in documentation in the 1930’s. While they would set out their phonographs and start recording audio, and snapping photos in black and white, modern technology allows me to do the very same on a device no larger than my hand. This ease of technology is incredible by comparison, and yet accomplishes the very same goals as those which preceded it.
