Upon visiting the site, it is disappointing at first to see that none of the original structure of Camp Recovery remains. It's memorial plaque is placed inside the fire station, rather than outside, seemingly hidden much like the remains of Camp Recovery. Upon consideration though, the Coles Fire Department is a living legacy of Camp Recovery. Since the fire tower was removed from Camp Recovery in 1988, the Coles Fire Station has stood in it's place, a marker of the efforts towards fire safety that the men of Camp Recovery worked so hard for. There is actually construction underway to tear down the old Fire Station which was replaced in 2017 by the current fire station. While there has been turn over after turnover of buildings on this land, one thing remains: the purpose of Camp Recovery in keeping Prince William County safe from fires. Camp Recovery, originally Camp P-71 was was the first Civilian Conservation Corps camp in Prince William County, Virginia. Even though original CCC Camp Wilderness is no longer there, there are plaques around the Courthouse. This was a site where hundreds of men got ready to fight in Civil Wars. The site now is built up, there are many stores around and traffic is high I still felt like this place was historic and a lace of honoring. Diving deeper into that you can also learn their stories such as how they ended up rebuilding the grounds for one of the greatest monuments in our history.This is significant to the history of the 1930s due to the fact that this was part of the Capitol Parks Improvement Program. I decided to use an iPhone camera to document my experience at the site. I believe modern technology provides a faster way of sharing and communicating images that the 1930s did not. For instance, the instant I took my picture I could have instantly shared it with my friend, but in the 1930s I would have been restricted and would not have been able to immediately share my experience. Title A name given to the resource Washington Monument Grounds Description An account of the resource As part of a larger Capital Parks improvement program assisted by the PWA, WPA, and CCC, New Deal workers did significant work in the grounds immediately surrounding the Washington Monument: “New entrance roads from 14th-st constructed; 15th-st widened and repaved thru the grounds; 16th-st closed thru the grounds and street area replaced by lawn; swimming pools removed and areas graded and landscaped” (Washington Daily News). WPA crews also shored up the north and south ends of the monument grounds to protect the Federal Triangle from floods. Crews may have done flood control work on multiple occasions; the WPA’s Work: A Journal of Progress noted flood control work on the site in 1936, while the Washington Post reported the building of a dike in 1938. A picture of the commemorative CCC sign, a video of the forest that surrounds the now overgrown trails, and a screenshot of notes taken at the site. This now overgrown site pays tribute to the workers of the CCC and showed me that not everything they did lasted as long as some other projects such as the state parks. This fire trail would have required so much painstaking labor to build yet it is now overgrown and is extremely hard to find. I decided to document this site using my phone to capture it's beauty and remoteness, plus this modern day technology allowed me to show others what the site looks like without then actually having to be there. However, technology can't capture the work the CCC team put into this site or the difficulty that came with finding the overgrown fire trail. I believe it is because it has been mostly forgotten that it plays more importance in our learning of history because something that required that much hard labor should not be forgotten. The site displays a trademark of many New Deal projects: focusing on economic stimulation by creating jobs for the unemployed through construction, as well as working to build things that were a step up from what had been the previous norm. The initial point of the Arcola School was to create construction jobs, and the continuing mission was to provide a better environment for children to learn. Given the climate of the 1930s, the school was a project meant to highlight the importance of retaining focus on the future, and how families would eventually heal from the Depression. I used only my phone to document the source, through digital photography, video, and audio recording. Modern technology like smartphones certainly makes it easier and more efficient to document these sources, as opposed to the longer time it would have taken in the '30s to photography the school. The style of documentation has changed very little in its essence, but the methods with which we are provided now are much more time-efficient in the documentation process. But, I really did have a significant impact. I went to the sewers in Fairfax. But, of course, as I’m sure everyone’s heard, there’s nothing there. However, I think that tells the better story. There’s lots of locally owned businesses surrounding it, cars drive by on Main Street, people are going to get dinner and this landmark that blends right into the infrastructure. These sewers are visible but don’t really look like anything special. It really said a lot about how we see history and choose to build over it but also this hidden beauty that there’s a lot of history around us that we might never explore. And, one that I can see in minutes. I had access to a bus, my phone died but I had a portable charger, and I used my phone to document it. This site can tell historical stories of what happened there, about the people who were put back to work in forestry, and about the dissolution of the camp and its recreation into a modern fire station. This site (its history) is a direct link to the programs that were set in place by FDR to assist in the unemployment crisis and rebuild the economy during the Depression, and makes the topics we learn about in class more relatable because it took place close to our backyards. I chose to document my visit through photos and video so that I could show what stands now, and how the area looks today (less forest, more roads). I think what we have now gives us an immediate connection to what we are learning, and technology has become more widely accessible to the public whereas in the 1930s, it was not all handheld, colored, and ready for immediate consumption. Of course photographs and videos were used in the 1930s to capture moments and ideas, today it is just a clearer, more realistic picture. Title A name given to the resource CCC Camp Recovery-Canova Virginia Description An account of the resource Known as P-71 (P for Private Forest), this was the first CCC camp in Prince William County. It consisted of a lookout tower used to detect forest fires. Built in 1933, Camp Recovery cost $30,000 to build and gave $10,000 a month to the local businesses. By January of 1934, the men stationed at Camp Recovery achieved almost all of their goals in regard to fire control in the Prince William County area. No original structure remains, however the grounds now house the Coles District Fire Station (pictured). A former fire station to the right is currently being torn down, and the memorial plaque has been moved to a county building. Although the National Zoo was not created specifically for the New Deal, the updates on the framework and improvements for the overall quality were made from the New Deal in the mid-late 1930's. The CWA and PWA helped upgrade the quality of the zoo which provided jobs for those who were involved in those government funded programs. The National Zoo provides stories about how mankind endangered several species and it also offers a way to help conserve these closely endangered species. This site has been a huge educational and cultural part of America because people come from far and wide to look at the variety of animals, including rare/almost extinct ones. The educational aspect of the zoo still remains strong today, during my visit I encountered many middle school students on a field trip. They were working on a worksheet while being able to interact with animals and view their habitats first hand. This proves that throughout the years, the zoo has become a great, not to mention free, educational resource for the public. The historical sight neighbors schools, churches, and local attractions. It consists of bumpy roads upon arrival and all throughout the camp grounds. It has also become an RV camping site for nature- lovers across the U.S.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br /><br />According to the Prince Wiliam County National Park Service, the "Recreation Demonstration Area was an effort created to alleviate the suffering of the Great Depression"[efn_note]<a href="https://www.nps.gov/prwi/learn/historyculture/stories.htm">https://www.nps.gov/prwi/learn/historyculture/stories.htm</a>[/efn_note]. The goal of the RDA was to aid struggling farmers, unemployed men, and poor children.<br /><br />To document my experience, I used my Iphone camera to capture the scenery. As I focused my lens, the quality of the many photos and videos I took were clear- cut and displayed color. Title A name given to the resource Prince William Forest Park - Triangle, Virginia Description An account of the resource In May of 1935 the young men of the CCC and workers of the WPA began working on the fourth largest Chopawamsic Recreation Demonstration Area. <br />The job of the CCC was to build five rustic cabin camps, thus providing urban social and welfare organizations of Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C a place to experience the simpler ways of camp life, while also building self-esteem and strong character values. <br />The historically maintained cabins still shelter families and groups almost seventy years later.
