We can see how peaceful the site is but we can imagine that it was a busy place back in 1939. The second one is part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. Trees fell in the canal. It is not well maintained anymore. Currently, questions can be raised about the interest of this canal and its allocated budget. The sound track was recorded on site and helps us imagine both the current and past atmosphere. Narrative Use this field to attach your narrative about the site. What is nowadays known under the name of “Carderock Picnic Pavilion” was actually a working camp “NP-2-Md.” in 1939. The project was led by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) who enrolled 200 workers to rehabilitate the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. Under the New Deal, programs like this brought the economy up by giving jobs and maintaining public infrastructures. Enrollees were paid $30 per month of which $25 would be sent to their home. I decided to use my smartphone. Indeed, I could record sounds and take picture with it. In the 1930s, machines (engraver, recorder, cameras) were heavy and hard to transport. Thanks to a smartphone, you could walk along the canal, find the pavilion and be ready to catch the perfect instants of life in the surroundings. In the 1930s, people could not share information and communicate as we do today. Indeed, smartphones are connected to social networks, so you can share your experience in direct time with anyone in the world. The process of collecting records is the same than in the 1930s. Indeed, creating a documentary now or then required to collect artifacts, take pictures, record sound, and film. We all want to share an experience, bring emotion to the audience, remind them of the past, and build a future. We all try to bring our senses to work, from a smell, a sound, an image, and by the touch, to recall moments of history. I chose the Ravensworth Stables and House site located in Springfield, Virginia. The Ravensworth Estate was owned by the Fitzhughs. Anne Marie Fitzhugh was the Aunt of Mrs. Robert E. Lee, the latter spent much of the civil war in this “Safe Haven”. When Fitzhugh departed this life in 1877, Mary Randolph Custis Lee, Mrs. Robert E Lee, inherited Ravensworth. During the New Deal there era a lesser known project was the Historic American Buildings Survey, or HABS. It was their mission to document every historical building in the country. Because of this New Deal project we have vast documentation for buildings that are now long gone, lost to time. HABS was very active during the new deal and continued to document historic buildings in a continuation into the 1960’s and 70’s. Thanks to new technology and digital databases the Library of Congress has digitized much of the information HABS collected. What was once just collected in boxes is now available online for researchers all over the world. The pictures added here are part of their collection. I have also included present day pictures of the area where Ravensworth was located. Since nothing currently remains except the historical marker I wanted to find a way to include more information. I was able to find Fairfax County’s copy of the deed for Ravensworth showing Mary Ranpdolph Custis Lee’s inheritance as well as their copy of Fitzhugh’s will. Unfortunately so many New Deal sites are nothing more than a blip on an interactive map, so it is wonderful that Ravensworth has a historic marker and documents that relate to this interesting place will endure. This place has fostered a recreation area that is still in use today. It is significant because it shows that what the cultural new deal set out to do succeeded. FDR didn’t have some pipe dream. Through this site, we can learn the stories of thousands of citizens and employees that used this city hall, which would not have been created if it weren't from the funds provided by the Public Works Administration. This project shows that the New Deal truly helped support Americans and gave them jobs to get back on their feet. The PWA helped a small city fix its economy and government by building to support its citizens for a very long time. I used the camera on my iPhone to take pictures and the sound notes to record sound because it is a lot more convenient than using an actual camera and tape recorder. Modern technology provides the luxury of being able to store all this information on one device that fits right into your pocket with no extra hassles. The plaque of the donors includes quote that reads, "A delightful place to enjoy a baseball game." This quote shows the purpose of this stadium and perhaps in the 1930s it served as a place to relieve stresses of the Great Depression. Existence during this time was bleak to most and a place to enjoy America's past time (baseball) shows the importance of the American culture of the time to promote a sense of belonging. To document my visit I used my phone to record the video and also to take the pictures that are shown. The technology here allows me to document and share an experience in short amounts of time meanwhile in the 1930s we see that documenting recordings and sharing them to the public would be very time consuming. Documentary styles are similar in the fact that we still share pictures and sounds to another but the mediums in which they are produced are much different and obviously much more condensed. Through this site, we can learn the stories of African Americans that went to this high school, and the discrimination that they faced. We can also learn about donations black citizens made to better the high school in the era of segregation. This project is significant to the 1930s because the Public Works Administration ran this project to find African Americans a place to learn. At the time, this was the only African American high school in Stafford County. Eventually, in 1962 students from the training center were able to attend the all-white Stafford County high school. These actions effectively changed the public school system in the Commonwealth of Virginia. I used the camera on my iPhone to record sound, videos, and take pictures. The reason for this is because it is much more convenient than having to take out a big tape recorder or camera. A story that can be told through this site would be the fact that the camp's purpose was to fight fire, so it seems appropriate that the space is now occupied by a volunteer fire station. It's significance would come from the fact that the government was attempting to give work to people in the area by setting up camps to help employ them. I used my phone to capture both the photo and video of the fire station. Today, modern phones can do what used to take multiple different types of equipment. By both being able to take still photos, videos, audio, and even be used as a map (which is how I got there) my experience documenting this piece of history was by far more convenient than it would have been in the 1930s. The only similarity I would find between now and then would be the fact that I used a photo as one way to document history, as it was common back then to document using a camera. There is a plaque in the park that says since the park is “the site of the memorial to President Buchanan, Meridian Hill cannot officially be named for another person.” Regardless, Meridian Hill Park is commonly known as the Malcom X park, especially by the local community. The park signifies how the values originally attributed to landmarks and other tangible concepts can change over time. This park is significant to the 1930s because after the park was opened in 1936, the government created a collection of concerts offered for free at the park. The open accessibility for the community to be able to gather and listen to popular music was an attempt at mending and elevating the nation’s spirits. An iPhone camera was used to document the site. The first file is uploaded is a still image of the docks that were built in the place of the old docks and wharves in Occoquan. The second file uploaded is a still image of a plaque in Occoquan describing the wharves. The third file uploaded is a sound file located in Occoquan. The fourth file uploaded is a still image of field notes taken while at the site. Narrative Use this field to attach your narrative about the site. After reading the plaque for this site, I was able to identify a few stories that could be told through it. The plaque states that prosperity ships were built at the site and flour, logs, fish, and ice were all shipped downstream. It must've been a very busy town due to all the items being shipped downstream. Tourists came here and stopped by the wharves to look around the small town of Occoquan. Another significant thing to point out about this site that paints a vivid picture in my mind is that many traveling shows would come downstream to these wharves. It's significant to the history of the 1930's because the wharves were built in the 1930s and it reminds me of the entertainment aspect we talked about in class. We talked a lot about music, movies, plays, and such. This site had traveling shows coming downstream to stop here, which was probably a huge deal for this small town. It was probably one of their main sources of entertainment for this town. I decided to use my phone to document this site because I have an iPhone which has a camera feature along with a audio recording feature. Modern technology really allows a wide variety of possibilities compared to those in the 1930s. Being able to take a picture in color is a huge advantage for modern times because you're able to really see all the details that a black and white may not provide. Also, being able to record and take a picture on the same device is extremely useful as well because it can all be done within a few minutes and no heavy equipment has to be carried around. The only similarity I can think of from modern times to back then is the way people might write notes down. People still use pen and paper, like I did, to document locations just like people did back then. Newspaper are still around today and people still write about findings in there just as they did back then. The general theme between then and now is that writing is still a used technique to document places/things. Poole Junior High School Narrative Use this field to attach your narrative about the site. I wanted to visit the Stafford Training School (now the Rowser Building) because I wanted to visit a place that's close to where I'm from. I've passed the Rowser Building many times growing up, and never knew that it was there, or the history that it contained. Stories that can be discovered while researching the Rowser Building include learning about the integration of Stafford's white schools in the 1960s and the hardships and inequality Black students faced while trying to receive an education, prior to integration. In addition, studying this site reveals the multiple measures put in place by the state and local government to prevent integration. Although my site focuses more on the aspect of education, it relates back to the fact that President Roosevelt's New Deal efforts did little to help African Americans in the social, economic, and political aspects of their lives. Even with the creation of the "Black Cabinet," I think the young, Black generation was forgotten about. I chose to use my iPhone to take pictures and record a voice memo off of YouTube. While this was handy for me because I'm always near my phone, I knew that I could rely on the advanced technology of the phone to retrieve photos and recordings and upload them to my laptop, without anything becoming distorted. I think modern technology makes retrieving these materials a lot easier and affords a large population of people, particularly Millennials, to take part in this research and information retrieval. Title A name given to the resource Stafford Training School - Stafford, VA Description An account of the resource In 1939, the Stafford Training School was a four-teacher school building built by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) to educate the county's Black students through the eighth grade. The school was renamed, H.H. Poole Junior High School, after the Superintendent of Stafford and King George County Negro Public Schools. It continued teaching students up until the eighth grade (Black students weren't allowed to attend high school). In 1946, Stafford County started busing children to Fredericksburg so that they could attend Walker Grant High School, Fredericksburg's Black high school. In the mid-1950s, busing to Fredericksburg stopped and H.H. Poole expanded to the twelfth grade. It wasn't until 1962, seven years after Brown v. Board of Education, when Poole's 11th & 12th grade students integrated the all-white Stafford High School. Now, what once was a school is now the Rowser Building, named after Ella Rowser, a teacher and principal at the Stafford Training School/H.H. Poole. The building serves as one of Stafford's parks, recreation, and community facilities.
