<text>Folger Park is a very beautiful site, with a couple of benches to sit and read on, as well as trees and some wildlife. There isn’t much traffic in the area so it’s fairly quiet, as well as being very close to a metro stop, which means it’s very accessible. It was redesigned in 1936 by the WPA, and has stayed the same since then, with the design carved on a stone, which I included in my pictures. To document the site I used my phone to take a picture and record it. In the 1930’s they had cameras, but they were not easily portable, and most were only for pictures and couldn’t take a video. It would take a lot of time, money, and commitment in order to film what I got in seconds. So while the pictures are similar, and the park hasn’t changed much, the styles between today and in the ‘30’s is very different.</text>

Photographs of these things isolated could probably be from any period in time, the only giveaway is really how the humans in them look. Even in video, I think the only real sign of modern presence is electric lights. One of my favorite memories from living in DC was staking out a spot at the base of the Monument to watch fireworks on the 4th of July, and thinking about how many years people have probably been doing exactly that. In the 1930s, I can see why wanting to restore all these historical sites would have meant a lot for helping to renew a sense of patriotism. </text>

<text>I chose the flagpole at Alexandria National Cemetery. In the 1930’s the Civilian Works Administration updated outbuildings, and a lodge. (There is no exact date given.) They also erected a new flag pole, which I was able to photograph. Alexandria National Cemetery is a Civil War cemetery, and had been around for well over 70 years by the time the CWA updated the grounds. Not only does it carry important historical significance in the context of the Civil War, but the idea that the flagpole that stands just beyond the gate was erected by the CWA, as part of the New Deal, is incredibly cool. I photographed the site. I photographed the flagpole, as well as an informational plaque about the cemetery itself. Photography is just as important now as it was during the 30’s. It was the truest form of documentation, because it was visual proof aside from what had been written on a page. </text>

<text>I went to the Department of Justice Building in Washington DC. The reasons why I picked this location was because I thought no one else would go there, I'm a Criminology Major so I figured going to the Department of Justice would be fitting for me, and it also included another one of my favorite things being Greek mythology (the sculptures in the pictures). The building was next to a very busy street in DC with alot of cars driving past. It was also in the heart of DC since the National History Museum was right in front of it. Although there was not a plaque talking about the sculptures there was one close by talking about the Department of Justice building itself. It was interesting how the plaque talked about the early roots of law, then led to talk about the "1930s-era murals illustrating how law and justice improve American life" inside the building, then the Federal Triangle Heritage Trail. It had my Crim geek side show a little bit in front of my boyfriend who was with me. I wish I was able to go back in time and be someone who works there compared to now. Just to see how the jobs have changed or stayed the same, see what kind of things they dealed with then, and be able to see everything that advanced or the things they never changed in the building. I think the site was significant back in the 1930's because with the Great Depression going on and so many different laws/organizations being put in place they had to make sure everything was being balanced out and done fairly, which is one of the things the Department of Justice handles. All and all I really enjoyed visiting this site. I learned about a New Deal site but also learned some interesting things about my major.
(P.s. Although I look kinda grumpy in my photo I was actually really happy, I was just being blinded by the sun :) )</text>

<text>In 1935, when the U.S. Department of Justice building was completed, a 150-year-old government entity was finally provided with its first permanent home.
While the overall building design conforms with a consistent design vocabulary established in the Federal Triangle, it is distinguished by Art Deco architectural elements and its innovative use of aluminum for details that were traditionally cast in bronze. All entrances to the building feature 20-foot-high aluminum doors that slide into recessed pockets. Interior stair railings, grilles, and door trim are aluminum, as are Art Deco torcheres, doors for the building’s 25 elevators, and more than 10,000 light fixtures.
Sculpture is skillfully integrated into the fabric of the building. Sculptor C. Paul Jennewein was selected to create a unified design concept for the building’s exterior and interior spaces, designing 57 sculptural elements for the building. His work ranged from the carved limestone figures for the pediments on the Constitution Avenue facade, to the aluminum Art Deco torcheres and light fixtures throughout the interior.</text>

It says it may not have been a New Deal project, but i feel as if it was appropriate for the time period as it does bring a sense of patriotism to the country. Photographing the site, I felt somewhat like a journalist in the sense that I had photographic evidence just like they did back in the 1930s to show proof that something exists. I also used a audio recording as it reminded me of the fireside chats that FDR made during the 30's to connect with the people. </text>

<text>Although the National Zoo was not created specifically for the New Deal, the updates on the framework and improvements for the overall quality were made from the New Deal in the mid-late 1930's. The CWA and PWA helped upgrade the quality of the zoo which provided jobs for those who were involved in those government funded programs. The National Zoo provides stories about how mankind endangered several species and it also offers a way to help conserve these closely endangered species. This site has been a huge educational and cultural part of America because people come from far and wide to look at the variety of animals, including rare/almost extinct ones. The educational aspect of the zoo still remains strong today, during my visit I encountered many middle school students on a field trip. They were working on a worksheet while being able to interact with animals and view their habitats first hand. This proves that throughout the years, the zoo has become a great, not to mention free, educational resource for the public.</text>

<text>This site can tell historical stories of what happened there, about the people who were put back to work in forestry, and about the dissolution of the camp and its recreation into a modern fire station. This site (its history) is a direct link to the programs that were set in place by FDR to assist in the unemployment crisis and rebuild the economy during the Depression, and makes the topics we learn about in class more relatable because it took place close to our backyards. I chose to document my visit through photos and video so that I could show what stands now, and how the area looks today (less forest, more roads). I think what we have now gives us an immediate connection to what we are learning, and technology has become more widely accessible to the public whereas in the 1930s, it was not all handheld, colored, and ready for immediate consumption. Of course photographs and videos were used in the 1930s to capture moments and ideas, today it is just a clearer, more realistic picture.</text>

Built in 1933, Camp Recovery cost $30,000 to build and gave $10,000 a month to the local businesses. By January of 1934, the men stationed at Camp Recovery achieved almost all of their goals in regard to fire control in the Prince William County area.

No original structure remains, however the grounds now house the Coles District Fire Station (pictured). A former fire station to the right is currently being torn down, and the memorial plaque has been moved to a county building.</text>

<text>The bus took me 4 minutes, I took iPhone photos and audio in 11, and I got back on the bus and back to campus in 15. But, I really did have a significant impact. I went to the sewers in Fairfax. But, of course, as I’m sure everyone’s heard, there’s nothing there. However, I think that tells the better story. There’s lots of locally owned businesses surrounding it, cars drive by on Main Street, people are going to get dinner and this landmark that blends right into the infrastructure. These sewers are visible but don’t really look like anything special. It really said a lot about how we see history and choose to build over it but also this hidden beauty that there’s a lot of history around us that we might never explore. And, one that I can see in minutes. I had access to a bus, my phone died but I had a portable charger, and I used my phone to document it. Accessibility and easy documentation has certainly changed since the 1930s. </text>
