Working in New York

For this page, I decided to use text analysis and I was able to use Voyant to help me distant read. The files within voyant focused on the experiences women had working in New York City during the 1930s. The reason I used this is that I wanted to get an idea of what the lives of women were like before the great depression and how their careers changed after the stock market crash. My cirrus really caught my attention because I thought there would be more obvious words like woman, working, or career but I did not see any of those. However, I did notice that the word "Mrs" was a common word used in the interviews, it was mentioned over 80 times. Throughout several of the interviews, I was able to conclude that it was hard for women to find jobs because they did not hold as much value as men at the time. A couple of women even mentioned turning to prostitution for money. However, the picture I chose shows two women successfully working in New York and making money. I thought it showed a nice positive perspective on women.
