Uncle Billy McCrea was interviewed for the ex-slave narratives and he gave insight as to how folk songs were incorporated into his life. Near the beginning of his interview, John Lomax asks him to recite one of the folk songs that they used to sing while working. Lomax was very kind and made sure that McCrea was comfortable in doing so. This illustrates the aforementioned interview instructions because Lomax wasn't pressuring McCrea into doing something he didn't want to do. He wanted to make sure that McCrea was comfortable. Once McCrea was ready, he sang the folk song that was used when they were toting salt from a boat to the warehouse. This sheds light to how important folk songs were to American culture. It brought some life and joy into their daily lives and represents how American culture is one where people perservere and incorporate ways to enjoy things that are not enjoyable.
