Mobility in the FWP

The Federal Writer's Project was an organization under the New Deal that brought jobs to writers and the unemployed in order to get the economy moving. One of the biggest and most important projects of their organization was the American Guides seriesWith the local and state writers coming together, everyone was able to get the chance to paint the perfect picture of their state.

The goal of such writing: MOVEMENT

At this point in time, America entered into a period of stagnation both economically and in terms of people being unable to work. These books helped in both of those departments. The Guides would brign tourism, a great source of income and implore people to explore and discover new things within each of the states. This movement through the country would allow America to redefine itself and let others see what it is and can become.

Going Off The Road

The map above features one of those many tours featured in the Guides. The state of focus here is Maine. The tour heavily focuses on wilderness and outdoor sports like fishing and canoeing and hiking. This tour best represents exploring what the state has to offer as it is quite scenic and gives a great sense of beauty America has.
