Who is America?

The 1930's were a time of great turmoil and cultural upheaval that eventually went on to shape a great deal of the United States national identity. The Great Depression saw multiple government efforts to create a unified America that was connected in ways that exluded misery and suffering. Federal Project Number One (Federal One) boasted the creation of multifaceted art projects that where designed to have a wide reaching audience. These projects where a direct reflection of the current times and in many ways perpetuated stereotypes about who was actually American and who was not.

This Exhibit seeks to understand how the subtle ways in which notions of American identity where asserted and who has often exluded.  I will be analyzing the language used through WPA documents and the American Guide Series through voyent and mapping tools, to understand who was considered an American.
