Although financial security still played a role in determining how much time was able to be alloted to non-work ventures, the WPA posters helped promote the idea that recreation was a necessity for everyone, regardless of class distinctions. The posters encouraged people to participate in athletics, hiking, and visiting the newly built recreation centers. President Roosevelt's signing of the Fair Labor Standards Act in 1938, in addition to the WPA posters that pushed for people to participate in recreational activities, created a powerful combination that helped lessen the hyperfixation on employment and survival, to creating a society that recognized self-care as a necessity.
